CUSTODI DEL LUPOGuardians of the Tuscan Wolf

Πάθος · Toscana

He was here before the vineyards. He was here before the walls. He was here before us.

WATCH HIMKNOW HIMKEEP HIM

The Apennine wolf walks the ridges between Montalcino, the Val d'Orcia and the Maremma. We keep his paths open, his packs whole and his neighbours at peace.

Every night

Every night he crosses the Cassia. Every night he passes the sleeping farms. Every night, fewer return.

We built the roads for speed.

He walks them to survive.

Fear sees a threat at the fold.

Knowledge sees a keeper of the forest.

From a footprint to a future

One track becomes a family. One family becomes a valley alive.

  1. First, a track pressed into the clay after rain.
  2. Then, a howl carried across the valley at dusk.
  3. Then, a family of five on the ridge above the vines.
  4. Then — if we act now — a wild Tuscany handed whole to our children.

Λόγος · The reasoning

Nearly lost. Slowly returned. Now at risk again.

Fifty years ago Italy came close to losing its wolf. Protection brought him back across the Apennines and into Tuscany. The work that saved him is not finished.

~100

wolves left in all of Italy in the early 1970s, confined to the central and southern Apennines.

~3,300

wolves across Italy in the first national estimate by ISPRA (2020–21), with Tuscany among the regions most densely occupied.

2025

the year Europe lowered the wolf from “strictly protected” to “protected”, opening the door to culls.

Fewer attacks on flocks mean fewer reasons to kill.

Fewer killings mean more stable packs.

More stable packs mean fewer young dispersers wandering into farms.

Calmer valleys mean a wolf that stays — and a farmer who stays.

What threatens him

Four dangers, one answer.

The answer is prevention: help the shepherd, and the wolf is safe. Leave the shepherd alone, and the wolf pays.

Conflict at the fold

Unprotected sheep and goats invite attacks. Attacks invite retaliation.

Poison and the gun

Illegal killing remains a leading cause of death for Italian wolves.

Roads

The SR2 Cassia, the SS223 and the strade bianche cut through territories wolves must cross nightly.

Hybridisation

Free-roaming dogs breed with wolves and dilute the Apennine line.

What works

A fence, a dog, a camera.

Electric night pens, Maremmano-Abruzzese guardian dogs and camera-trap monitoring are proven in the Apennines. They cost little against a single lost flock, and less still against a lost pack.

What he gives back

He thins the wild boar that root up the vineyards. He culls the weak deer that spread disease. He keeps the woods in balance without asking for a single euro.

Population figures: ISPRA national wolf monitoring 2020–21; legal status: Bern Convention amendment (2024) and EU Habitats Directive amendment (2025).

Ἦθος · Who we are

We live in these hills. We work in these hills. We answer to these hills.

We are the shepherd's neighbours, not the shepherd's enemies. We are walkers of the crete, not visitors to it. We come with fences and dogs, not with slogans and blame.

Α

Prevent

We fund and fit electric night pens and place Maremmano guardian dogs with farms around Montalcino, Castiglione d'Orcia and the Amiata.

Β

Protect

We run camera traps along known corridors, report poisoning and push for safe crossings on the roads that kill.

Γ

Present

We teach in schools, guide night walks and tell the true story of the wolf in Italian and English.

Our promise to you

Every euro traced. Every fence mapped. Every report published.

We publish an annual account of income, spending and results. Where your money goes, you will see it go.
